Association of Ukrainians in Victoria

Stand against the Russian war in Ukraine

Irene Stawiski

Lesia Rudewych

I grew up in Geelong being very much part of the Ukrainian Community – attending and then teaching Ukrainian school, being active in Plast including as a vykhovnyk , many years (from the late 70s to the mid nineties) on the committee of USC Lion Volleyball Cub organizing and coaching local teams and organizing interstate sports tournaments.

I have been active in Ukrainian Catholic Church and a long time member of the Association of Ukrainians in Victoria Geelong serving on committees organizing concerts, zabavy,  malanky,  festivals (including Pako Festa) and many other events, often demonstrating the art of pysanky making and also conducting lessons at various primary and high schools in the Geelong area in the art of pysanky writing.

From the age of 18, while at university, I worked part time for Dnister, Ukrainian Credit Co-operative in the Geelong Branch doing everything from loans, insurance and teller work and running a small shop as part of Postup.  Later I moved to Melbourne and worked full time at Dnister’s head office for a few years.

For the last 10yrs or so I have been on the AUV Geelong Audit Committee.

I have a degree in Education, a post graduate degree in Computer Science and am CELTA qualified to teach English as a second language. Most of my career has been in IT (Information Technology), working first for Fielden Management Services (10 yrs) and then for Oracle Co-operation (18yrs), mainly in technical support roles as well as developing and running courses and holding various management positions.

For the last 10yrs or so I have been on the AUV Geelong Audit Committee.

I began working for the AUV at Essendon as the Operations Manager in 2017. My duties include overseeing the day to day running of the AUV, ie running the office (accounts payable, invoicing, memberships, correspondence), repair and maintenance of the Essendon Narodnyj Dim , hall hire and also liaising with and assisting our branches.
