Association of Ukrainians in Victoria

Stand against the Russian war in Ukraine

Tatiana (Tania) Zachariak

Born in Adelaide, I shifted to Melbourne in 1976 with my Ukrainian husband Roman Zachariak. Having already been involved there in the Ukrainian community in student & youth organisations in leadership roles, we continued to do the same in Melbourne.

Since arriving. I have been active on the boards of AFUO (‘CYOA”), UYA (‘CYM’), AUV, Liga Vilnoyi Ukrayiny (LVU), Ukrainian Catholic Church & Hromada (AUV).

I consider my major achievements to be in setting up the Welfare Bureau at AUV in the late 1970s, being a vykhovnyk in UYA for more than 50 years and still  to this day, being on every UYA  Board Melbourne in various roles, except for two years, until 2014, undertaking a Victoria wide research survey interviewing people,  with Prof Lubomyr  Lawriwsky of our aging Ukrainian community which formed the basis for the grant application for establishing Kalyna Care, developing the Self Development Course for UYA in 1983 which  has continued for almost 40 years and involves CYM &  the wider Ukrainian Community and chairing the Committee for updating the AUV Constitution from 2010-2014. In 1985/86 as Referent Molodi in AFUO, I chaired the organising Committee for the first ‘CYM/Plast ‘Australia wide Tabir – ‘Moloda Ukraina’.

Currently, I am Chair pf the Eparchial Financial Council of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Australia, NZ & Oceania (since 2013), the Safe Guarding Committee of the Eparchy, on the Board of the Australian Executive of the UYA, and now Chair of the Board of AUV, Deputy Chair/Secretary  of State & Federal LVU. I still have a youth group (rij) in UYA called Varenyky. ,

Professionally I have qualifications in Podiatry, Community Welfare, Social Work, human services management, business and human resources management. I have two Masters Degress. In addition, I am a Victorian Williamson Leadership Fellow. I have worked in local and State governments in management, child protection, family day care, preschool and child care, adoption & foster care, policy and practice development, aboriginal liaison, child death enquiries, human resources, organisational development & change, budget development, project management & tendering processes, occupational health & safety, ministerial briefing.
