The following provides an update on the Association of Ukrainians in Victoria Humanitarian Aid Committee (AUVHAC), provided by Committee chair Teresa Kohut:
The AUVHAC are active members of the well established community of Association of Ukrainians in Victoria (AUV), which has been in existence for more than 70 years. The AUV has created a subcommittee named the Humanitarian Aid Committee, whose members are themselves Ukrainian-Australians and have strong family connections in Ukraine. AUVHAC was formed to support the settlement of displaced Ukrainians arriving in Victoria as a result of the current Russian invasion in Ukraine.
Our committee is working in collaboration with the Federal and State Governments to provide support for displaced Ukrainians who have fled Ukraine, and have arrived in/will be arriving in Victoria. Ukrainians have been encouraged to apply for the T600 visa as this provides them the quickest entry to Australia, to help them flee the conflict. However, the T600 visa is only temporary and provides access to limited government services and support. Our Government is currently finalising details and timing for a visa which will allow displaced Ukrainians currently on a T600 visa to transition to a Humanitarian visa, which then provides access to services for healthcare, education employment and more.
In the meantime, the AUVHAC is prioritising support for displaced Ukrainians arriving on a T600 visa that do not have any friends or family that can support them, and in situations where there is an urgent need e.g. no accommodation.
AUVHAC reassures displaced Ukrainians within our community that we are here for you and will help you access the full range of support services available when the conversion to the Humanitarian visa has taken place.
If you know of any displaced Ukrainians that are arriving in Australia, please ensure their details and information are uploaded onto the Ukrainians.org.au website. Through this national confidential database, we can ensure Ukrainians needing our assistance will receive it.
We are very grateful for all offers of support, whether for accomodation, donations, volunteering, job offers, and more. We ask that all offers be uploaded onto the Ukrainians.org.au webpage as we will draw on this website, when assistance is needed.
We will provide more details and information as they come to light and promote community connections. If you would like to connect with us now, please email AUVHAC@AUV.ORG.AU
Slava Ukraini!
