The Create for Ukraine project unites your inner creativity with your ability to make a meaningful impact on someone’s life far across the globe. Join us for this glimpse into Ukrainian identity and folk culture through its beautiful tradition of embroidery.

Guided by the Ksenia from KX Embroidery, you will have the opportunity to create your own embroidered motif from scratch, using a design especially chosen to unite tradition with the contemporary. Our masterclass is suitable for absolute beginners in embroidery and those with some level of experience.

About the artist: Ksenia is a grandma-taught and self-taught tragic for Ukrainian embroidery. For Ksenia, embroidery is a connection to heritage and a focus on crafting truly gorgeous pieces that live up the long and rich tradition of Ukrainian embroidery. You can read about and see more of Ksenia’s embroidery at KXembroidery.

About the design: Motifs in Ukrainian embroidery contain a code.  Oberih is a protective motif, an amulet, believed to offer protection and good fortune. Protective motifs are being embroidered onto shirts for Ukraine’s defenders or onto small pieces that they carry on their person.  This oberih hails from Volyn in north western Ukraine. In the masterclass, you will be taught to embroider it in the technique of hlad, a counted satin stitch.

Our masterclass is kindly supported by Living and Learning Nillumbik in Eltham.

Places are limited to provide you with a more personal and enhanced experience. All the materials required will be supplied.

Proceeds from the masterclass will further assist in the protection of Ukraine’s defenders. All of the funds raised will be donated to the provision of tactical medicine.
